My Brother-In-Law has asked me to see what I could do with his laptop. Let me rephrase that. he has asked me to see if I could do something other than throw it out. It's a Compaq presario 1245, about 7 years old. It has a 3GB 2.5" EIDE Internal hard drive and 32mb memory card. (I'll wait while you laugh.) Okay...now I have found a 'refurbished' hard drive 20GB for under 40 ( I told him he wouldn't really need more than 20GB, and all the ones I found under 20 cost about as much), but know n...

I have accumulated some PC's. 2 eMachines T2642 that don't run (a notorious bug caused these babies to crash...the only thing still good is the hard drives and memory...256MB each) IBM 300GL Gateway with Celeron and running Win98 Besides burning them.......what would you do with them to get the most out of them? I've been thinking of putting together something as a secondary that I might try to run Linux on, but not sure I can or where to start.

I don't know what is happening. First..Photoshop started getting a little buggy. Then when I went to shut down the computer, it wouldn't. It wouldn't restart or shutdown, so I manually shut it down. When I rebooted i got this message instead of my logon screen... parse error ';' at line 173 I had to click on it a few times to get to logon and when I did, it was WindowsXP's regular logon. I tried to do a system restore, but again, it will not shut down or restart.

Has anyone run across this little problem? It just started happening on my PC. Err Msg: "Cannot Open the Volume for Direct Access" When You Start ... I can no longer check for file system errors. I looked through Microsofts info, and the only dirext reference to it I could find concern win200, or virus or disk monitoring software, neither of which I have changed recently. I have run all my adware/virus scans and done all the usual stuff you would do, but I am simply locked out of this ...

Microsoft had intended to sponsor a special episode of 'Family Guy' to promote Windows7. However, apparently after a screening of the episode, Microsoft decided to back out. It seems that after 10 years and 120 episodes, Microsoft had no idea that 'Family Guy' was full of 'controversial material'. The episode will still air and is looking for another sponsor. (Hey Brad, ya reading this?) All that's left of the now defunct partnership is the video below from the WIndows 741 Student site. &n...

I'm having an issue with CCleaner. I have always used it and never had a single problem until now. When I run the Registry cleaner, it is showing damn near everything in the registry as a problem. I unistalled and reinstalled a fresh copy. I've run Spybot, Avast, and hijackthis to see if there was something else going on, but can find nothing. It still shows a crapload of registry problems. Soem of them look like important items I would not want to delete. It's NEVER shown this many items ...

Fron Lifehacker : The popular Windows firewall application ZoneAlarm Free has a big brother called ZoneAlarm Pro, which boasts a handful of features not available in the free version—including integrated antivirus. Normally $40, ZoneAlarm Pro will be available Tuesday  (11/18) for the low, low price of free. ZoneAlarm Free was voted one of the five best Windows firewalls by Lifehacker readers, so if you like what you've seen from that, a free upgrade to the Pro version sounds...

I got the July update for my WindopwsXP. I didn't notice anything right away because I hadn't restarted my computer.  When I got to work, my Wife's PC would not connect to the internet after she got her update. I looked at it and I lowered the firewall on ZA to medium. Bam..connected.  When I got home tonight I had the same problem on my PC. The only way to connect on FF, IE or in my email was to lower ZA's firewall to medium.  Anyone else having this problem? Or ca...

I recently upgraded my memory. I have a very modest computer and finally grew tired of seeing the little pop-up telling me my virtual memory was low while I was in the middle of a Photoshop project. I went from 512MB to 2GB. I'm still getting the low virtual memory message. I know it can be adjusted and I also know if you don't do it right, it can just make the performance worse. This is what I am working with. Any help would be appreciated. I know there is probably a standard ...

In the PM area and now in the forums...when I type a reply or try to write a new forum post, it's going v e r y  s l o w. I'm a hunt and peck typer, yet I could type the dictionary up to Z before the word Apple ever appears on the screen. Currently, because it is so slow and will not allow me to anything else on my PC til the words catch up, I have to type my stuff in notepad first and paste it here.  With my PC at work, I don't have this problem at all. On both, I am running th...

I came across some cool stuff this week. One item in particular was designed for kids 3 and up. It's actually pretty cool, so I thought I would focus my picks this week on stuff for the kids. To be more precise, things to bring out the 'skinner' in the little nose-miners! First up is Dremples 1.5 WWW Link The screenshot/gif doesn't begin to do it justice. 'Drempels makes colorful, swirling, hallucinogenic patterns that resemble a hurricane or tornado. It normally runs in yo...

Recently I've learned of 'Giveaway of the Day'. It's been around a while and it seems strange I haven't learned of it before. You see, I spend quite a bit of time searching the web for 'freeware'. There is lots of it but as you may know, some of it really sucks or is just quite useless. So, I thought I would offer up a few free apps that I have downloaded and actually used. These are app's I like and found to be relatively useful and or interesting. I just thought I'd share them with y...

I downloaded the latest Game Ready Driver yesterday from NVIDIA when the Game Ready App alerted me it was available and fell victim to the BSOD as did thousands of others. It took me a bit to even discover I was not alone and it was actually not my fault for a change. I did manage to boot into repair mode and I did a system restore. A lot of people were not even able to do that. I can attest to the fact that constant rebooting only got me the BSOD over and over. There were several fixes...
