Make it stop!
Published on February 24, 2006 By PoSmedley In Internet
I recently downloaded Windows Defender. The only problem I have with it is that the darn thing will not stop updating. I have to turn it off to keep it from updating the same definition over an over. Any one else run into this or know how to fix it?

Start/ Run and type “services.msc” (w/o qoutes). Click OK.

That worked.

Administrative Tools/ Services; scroll to Bamntsstv-81 or variant thereof.
Select/highlight and right click the entry and choose: Properties
On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button.
In Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click Apply, then OK

Couldn't click on 'Stop" because it was asking me to 'Start' it.
In Start-Up type, it was already set to 'Manual'. I changed it to 'Disable".

The settings already in there are confusing, since every time I run HJT, it lists it as running.

So now what. lol. I still don't know what the heck it is or does, and can't (should I?) get rid of it.

every time I run HJT, it lists it as running

Even after you disabled it?

Even after you disabled it?

yuppers.

I bet it's some kind of troll.

Get hold of yourself, Po'!
In services.msc, when you highlight Bamntsstv-81 or variant thereof, do you see any description or information about the service -- maybe to the left of it? If you highlight a service above or below it, you will see what I mean...

Highlight Bamntsstv-81-nadda, no info..When I click on Properties the next window has nothing. It has no dependencies, take no action for recovery, and a 15 character password (?) for log on that I know nothing about (?), and no info on the general tab.

Directly above it...Background Intelligence Transfre Service; Transfers data between clients and servers in the background. If BITS is disabled, featuures such as Windows Update will not work correctly.

Directly below is Clipbook;Enables clipbook viewer to store things and share it with remote computers. If this service is stopped, clipbook viewer will not be able to share information with remote computers.

The ones before & after don't matter-- just wanted you to see the kind of info that's usually there so you could see if Bamntsstv-81 was abnormal, which it appears to be...

yrag's prolly out having fun

I can't remember what you have......list all your security apps that are installed (running or not).

Also, do you now or have you ever had iTunes installed?
on Feb 25, 2006
I just installed iTunes about a week ago, but this has been here for months. However, I did have itunes when iI bought this PC. I removed it. I only reinstalled it so I could listen to Under The Skin and other site stuff.

I have AVAST, Windows Defender, Adaware, Spybot, Spyblaster, and Zone ALarm and System Mechanic have spyware programs. The only ones that run all the time are Windows Defender and AVAST. The others have to be manually started.

When I click on it, I get no info in the window to the left.

The second shows NO executable path.

This last one bugs me. Why is there something on MY computer with a password I didn't put there, don't know, and have no idea what it is?

on Feb 25, 2006
First off, I don't think this is anything more then an annoyance and more importantly harmless. I believe it to be a remnant of the original iTunes install. HJT is reporting it...well..because it's there, while Winpatrol is reporting it because it's not in there data base....

The one security aspect you don't have covered is trojans (which if this was something, that's what it would be). This is the best http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/ and the thirty day trial is fully functional. Run it and see if it comes up clean.

When it comes up clean (and it will) install this http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Process_Explorer_for_Windows_NT2000XP2003/1063606657/1 . If it's running (and I think not) it will show up in the process panel.

If it's not running and all of your security scans are clean....forget about it. It's a non-issue.

Will do, yrag. Letcha know.
on Feb 25, 2006
Ran Trojan Hunter...Clean.
Ran Process Explorer...No Find It.
Ran HJT again...NO FIND!?

So this is good , right? Even though, for me, it's like trying to ignore the pink elephant in the room. Cause I know it's there. Lurking. Just sitting there. With it's nasty little password that I don't know and it's ungoogle-able name. The ratbastard.

Thanks, yrag. I hated to waste your time for something that may have been nothing.
