Make it stop!
Published on February 24, 2006 By PoSmedley In Internet
I recently downloaded Windows Defender. The only problem I have with it is that the darn thing will not stop updating. I have to turn it off to keep it from updating the same definition over an over. Any one else run into this or know how to fix it?

It's not updating, that's why the continuing prompts (ignore the fact that it says it did). Look under Windows Defender/ Help/ About tab and you'll see you still have the old signatures....

This will do the trick:

Start/ Run, type: Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} Click OK. Click YES at the prompt.
When it's done (about 5 seconds), open Windows Defender. Click the Help options arrow. Click About Windows Defender, and then click Check for Updates.

Current sigs: 1.13.1282.6

Thanks Yrag. Seems to be ok. I'll know for sure when I boot up again. That's usually when it does it.

Yrag, while I have your attention, I have a tough one for you.
O23 - Service: Bamntsstv-81 - Unknown owner - (no file)

No one knows what it is. Not even the guys at the HJ forums. If you google it, the only entries that come up for it are from my HJ forum posts. It's always running, and even though they gave me some instructions, it can't be removed. I don't have a freaking clue wtf it is or does, but HJT and WinPatrol keep bringing it to my attention.

Is this showing up in Services with no corresponding process in Taskmgr?
on Feb 24, 2006
Got your email. I'm looking in Taskmgr, in the Processes and I don't see it anywhere. I checked my start-ups to and don't see it there.

Let's give this a shot:

Open Administrative Tools/ Services; scroll to Bamntsstv-81 or variant thereof.
Select/highlight and right click the entry and choose: Properties
On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button.
In Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
Click Apply, then OK

A Microsoft program would never do these things.

What happens when you try to open Admin Tools? Are you logged on as an Administrator (someone with Administrator permissions)?
on Feb 25, 2006
I only have one account on here and it is as Admin. When I click on Admin tools on the control panel, nothing happens. Everything else opens but that.
